Top 5 Wednesday: Favorite Sci-Fi & Fantasy Books

I have done some previous Top 5 Wednesday topics as videos Here if you're interested but now i'm going to be doing them here on this blog. Top 5 Wednesday is a Goodreads group where you can find all the weekly topics Here.

I won't have one every single week simply because sometimes I won't have anything for a particular topic, it happens. But I will do all those that I can. :)

1. The Abyss Surrounds Us & The Edge of the Abyss by Emily Skrutskie duology

An action-packed duology with lesbian pirates fighting sea monsters. It has wonderful characters and character development. It takes tropes and turns them on their head, calling out problematic things such as the fact that Cas refuses to get involved with Swift while they are not on equal footing due to the whole pirate trainee/captive thing. It is a very slow burn romance that I absolutely loved! 'The Edge of the Abyss' is not actually out yet, I got an E-ARC of it from netgalley and read it in January. It is expected to come out April 18th. I adore these books so much! Seriously if lesbian pirates fighting sea monsters doesn't get you I don't know what will!

2. The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury

An Aladdin retelling told from the point of view of the female Jinni/Genie. Lots of action, beautiful world, kick-ass female characters and an over-all wonderful adventure! It's been awhile since I read it and was before I started blogging and writing reviews on here as I got a copy in a goodreads giveaway before it was out and read it in December 2015. I would love to re-read this!

3. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

A heart-breaking sci-fi/romance book. It has loss, survival, courage, heart-break, a ridiculous AI, space war, and a deadly virus. It had me hooked from the first page and never let go!

I adored the characters, especially the main character Kady. She is one awesome, bad-ass heroine! She was very relatable as well, her thoughts, actions and the way she felt. She dealt with tough circumstances in an amazing way! Tough, Loving, Honorable. Also every character did what they thought was best with the information they had at the time. Sometimes you will love them, sometimes you'll hate them, but they did the best they could. There is also a great mix of protaganists and antagonists.

I still have to read the second book in the trilogy, Gemina, and the 3rd is expected to come out later this year.

4. Frostblood by Elly Blake

I read this in January and really enjoyed it! It's about Fireblood Ruby in a world ruled by the Frostbloods. A world divided by belief and power, divided up into binaries. Fire and Frost, and seeing those binaries blur. I really enjoyed the world-building and the characters.

I fell in love with Ruby and was able to relate to her in some ways. She is a nice and like-able character, always meaning well, but fiery and stubborn! I loved that about her! She knows her worth and that she is a person, not a tool to be used. She is caring, and passionate. There were also twists I didn't see coming. This is the first book in a trilogy and it just came out in January, so I am looking forward to the rest of the series!

5. Across the Universe trilogy by Beth Revis

When I finally decided to pick up Harry Potter in 2015 (I wasn't allowed to read it as a kid and then as an adult I guess I figured it was too little too late and had fallen out of love with reading thanks to both that and school...I was wrong and finally picked it up when I wanted to rediscover the joys of reading that I had as a little kid with Goosebumps) I finished Harry Potter but then didn't know what to read next. I wanted to continue reading..but read what? It's difficult for me to get out so I have to order my books online. I found Booktube and had heard some good things about this series...so this is what I picked up next and it helped spiral my love of reading again, and for that I will forever be grateful for it.

That said I of course really loved this trilogy or it wouldn't be on this list! It's been awhile since I read it and I read it before I started blogging and writing reviews. It involves Amy and her parents being put in cryosleep on the ship Godspeed until they reach another planet 300 years in the future where they will be awoken...only Amy is woken up early...someone tried to murder her. I may not remember all the details but I remember adoring this trilogy and after reading the first book immediately ordering the 2nd and 3rd and impatiently waiting for them and devouring them when they arrived. I loved Amy and Elder, the mystery on the ship Godspeed and the entire journey.
