Book Postscript 2018 Tag

I was tagged by @book_invasion whose video is Here and the original video is Here

1. The longest book you read this year and the book that took you the longest to finish.

For longest book my year in 2018 on Goodreads will tell you The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales but I started that in 2016, I was already on page 353, so i'm counting my longest as Horrors! 365 Scary Stories. As for what took me the longest to finish, The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales. THREE YEARS. Horrors! 365 Scary Stories coming in second place and I read that through-out the year, with it's 365 short stories.

2. A book you read in 2018 that was outside of your comfort zone.

I don't really have a comfort zone, I love reading all over the place.

3. How many books did you re-read in 2018?

4 depending on your definition of re-reading. I re-read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, or at least in a way because I read the 1831 version in 2015 (I didn't know it wasn't the original, or that there was a more conservative version which is what I read) and this year I read the original 1818 version. I also re-read Say Cheese and Die! by R.L. Stine as i'm positive I read it as a child, but there's about 20 years between those reads! Also Silent Night by R.L. Stine which I read as a teenager so about 15 years between those reads? And also Krampus: The Yule Lord by Brom which I read 3 years ago and loved. Still love it.

4. Favorite re-read of 2018

Krampus: The Yule Lord by Brom, I read it in December of 2015 and kept wanting to re-read it every December but never getting to it, I finally did this year! I love the amount of heart and care that went into this book!

5. A book you read for the first time in 2018 that you look forward to re-reading in the future

Curved Horizon by Taylor Brooke, it's the second book in the "Camellia Clock Cycle" duology. I had gotten both from Netgalley and loved them so much! I need to get them in finished form and re-read them someday! A wonderful queer and heartfelt duology dealing with friendships and mental health that I really related too.

6. Favorite single short story or novella that you read in 2018

Mothmen: Myths and Legends Volume One by Kaelan Rhywiol, a m/m/f polyamorous kinky triad involving moth people where you really get to know all 3 of the characters and it deals with grief, communication and consent. It's freaking awesome! I want more with these characters <3.

7. Mass Appeal: A book you liked and would recommend to a wide variety of readers

Are we smart enough to know how smart animals are? by Frans De Waal, an engaging, accessible, balanced and eye-opening book about animals! There are plenty of other books i'd love to put here but I know wouldn't be for everyone as much as i'd hope them to be, so I think this is probably the safest bet.

8. Specialized Appeal: A book you liked but would be hesitant to recommend to just anyone

Never Be Alone by Paige Dearth, Paige Dearth's books (that i've read so far, this one and Mean Little People), are hard-hitting realistic horror. Stuff that happens everyday to people. Homelessness, child abuse, drugs, prostitution etc. They are heartfelt and really really hard to get through but oh so important stories that need to be heard. I'd hesitate because these are NOT books to go into when you're in a bad mental space. Take care of yourself first and make sure you're ready. And keep the tissues handy.

9. Reflect on your year as a bookish content creator (goals met, good/bad memories, favorite videos you made, etc)

I honestly haven't really thought about it. I think I did ok. I didn't draw like I wanted to but books-wise I read more than my goal of 104 and read a lot of awesome books! I kept my booktube channel going. I did a little readathon. Reviewed every book I read in Recent Reads videos. Had some T5W videos (which now I do on this blog), did some tags. Ooh I know a favorite thing I did this year, my "Why i'm done with saying "guilty pleasure"" blog post! I don't tend to do many discussions but I did this one and i'm happy with it. Goodbye being guilty for reading!

10. Tag some fellow bookish content creators

I honestly feel like everyone's been tagged at this point and I get tag anxiety, so if you want to do this consider yourself tagged!

Top 5 Wednesday: Most Anticipated 2019 Releases

The Top 5 Wednesday group is Here.

I don't really look to see what's coming out but as I do follow/watch a lot of bookish people I inevitably find out about upcoming releases, and here are some i'm really excited for!

1. Children of the River Ghost by Alexandra Aceves

"A YA horror novel in which 16-year-old Katie, reeling from bullying after her last relationship, moves to New Mexico and falls for a mysterious, beautiful girl who may be the ghost La Llorona."

I have no idea who La Llorona is but an f/f horror ghost story?! Yes please!

2. Slayer by Kiersten White

BUFFY! Seriously, that's all I know because that's all I NEED to know to be excited! It's set in the Buffyverse, after Buffy the tv show ends I think with a new slayer. Buffy <3

3. The Last 8 by Laura Pohl

I heard it involves aliens and queer characters. I am here for this. Oh and Area 51. My queer and alien-loving self is very excited!

4. Coral by Sara Ella

A Little Mermaid retelling that explores mental health.

5. The Murmur of Bees by SofĂa Segovia

Hopefully this counts. It's being translated into English and released in English in April.

"From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him as if he were their own. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can—visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous. Followed by his protective swarm of bees and living to deliver his adoptive family from threats—both human and those of nature—Simonopio’s purpose in Linares will, in time, be divined.

Set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution and the devastating influenza of 1918, The Murmur of Bees captures both the fate of a country in flux and the destiny of one family that has put their love, faith, and future in the unbelievable."

What releases are you excited for in 2019?

Anthologies i'd like to get to in 2019!

I realized I have quite a bit of anthologies i'd really like to get to in 2019. This isn't to say I won't read other anthologies, I most likely will, but these are the ones i'm really looking forward to reading the most. Of course i'm also not promising I will read all of them in 2019 but I can try! Also I already own all of these.

H.P. Lovecraft: The Complete Fiction and The Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe.

These probably aren't technically anthologies, but I wanted to mention them. I want to work on (not necessarily finish, they are both large of course!) both of these, unless I end up realizing I hate them and dnf them, but I think i'll like them and it's a shame I don't really know Lovecraft's or Poe's work with how influential they've become.

Kevin J. Kennedy Presents Collected Christmas Horror Shorts, Toil & Trouble: 15 Tales of Women & Witchcraft, Alien Sex: 19 Tales by the Masters of Science Fiction and Dark Fantasy

I actually hope to read and/or finish these by the end of 2018 but as it's about halfway through December and I can't promise that I will, I wanted to put them here in case I don't. I have started Toil & Trouble and Alien Sex but have not yet started the Christmas Horror Shorts as of writing this.

Off Limits: Tales of Alien Sex, Girls Who Bite: Lesbian Vampire Erotica, Eternal Frankenstein, Into the Mummy's Tomb

Off Limits I will be reading in February/March for a group read. F/F Vampire Erotica? Yes please! I love Frankenstein so Eternal Frankenstein sounds right up my alley. Into the Mummy's Tomb, well I want to read some Mummy stories.

Magic and Romance: A Collection of Lesbian Short Stories, Everything that's Underneath, Cocktales, Hot Blood: Tales of Erotic Horror.

F/F romances, Horror, a response to the #cockygate crap and erotic horror. These are in no particular order lol.

Corpse Cold: New American Folklore, Necrophilia Variations, Doorbells at Dusk: Halloween Stories, Scream and Scream Again!

I've heard good things about Corpse Cold. Necrophilia Variations seems...interesting, and upon reading reviews potentially thought-provoking. Doorbells at Dusk and Scream and Scream Again I will hopefully read closer to Halloween.

Unbroken: 13 Stories Starring Disabled Teens, Just Get to It: NY Girl-Girl Romances, Coming Together: Arm in Arm in Arm..., The Bizarro Starter Kit (Orange)

Stories about disabled teens by disabled authors, hell yes! I am disabled, and was born disabled, so while I am no longer a teen, when I was I was a disabled teen and while I wish something like this had been around then, i'm so glad it exists now! F/F Romances, all the yes. Tentacle Erotica that benefits the Ocean (proceeds of the book go to benefit charity). Bizarro...not exactly a new genre but not a popular one either. It says "Bizarro strives not only to be strange, but fascinating, thought-provoking, and, above all, fun to read."

Winter Solstice, Vernal Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox

Seasonal anthologies i'd like to read in the apropriate seasons.

Collected Easter Horror Shorts, Mermaids and Other Mysteries of the Deep

Easter horror stories that'd be nice to read around Easter and the Mermaid anthology I plan to read for Merfolk May.

So...that's quite a long list of anthologies i'd like to get to! Have you read any of these? Any of them sound interesting to you too? What anthologies would you like to read?

Goals for 2019!

I have a lot of goals for 2019! Why so many? Because I want to have fun with my hobbies and make 2019 as good of a year as I can. If I don't strictly complete ALL THE THINGS I will not be considering it a failure. These are things to basically help me have fun and do the things I want to do. If I have fun and don't stress myself out over things that don't need to be stressed out over it'll be a success. I just want to do these things, or at least attempt them and hopefully have fun. That's my main goal of 2019, have as much fun as possible. So without further ado, here are my "goals".

1. Re-read 12 or more books

I want to re-read all 7 of the original Harry Potter books, the first 3 books in The Vampire Chronicles series by Anne Rice (and then continue with that series), and The Abyss Surrounds Us duology by Emily Skrutskie. That right there is 12 books...and there are plenty more books I want to re-read. Some just because, some so I can refresh my brain before continuing with a series.

2. Catch up and/or finish some series

I want to make it at least somewhat of a focus next year to continue with, catch up on, and finish some damn series! The amount of series i'm in the middle of and/or have read the first book in is...well...shameful. If a series isn't complete I might wait until it is but there are series that are complete, or will finish next year, that I can finish. I can make progress, hopefully.

3. Read at least 12 Nonfiction books

There are SO MANY I want to read but i've barely stepped my toe into nonfiction. But I love what i've read so far and there are so many nonfiction books I wanna read!

4. Read some poetry

I'm not big into poetry but i've read a little, and enjoyed some of it. I'm thinking read at least 6 poetry books next year?

5. Read at least 6 classics

Like poetry, i'm not big into classics, but there is one here and there that I enjoy and there are some I want to give a shot. Though classics will take me a lot longer than poetry will. Numbers are somewhat arbitrary (i'll be happy if I at least attempt the goals to read so many books of x type even if I don't reach the specified number). This is not counting Edgar Allen Poe and H.P. Lovecraft as I have the complete collections of both of their works as kindle books and I do want to work on them in 2019 as well, in addition to some other classics.

6. Read at least 12 Queer books (that I already owned in 2018)

Pretty self explanatory. I'm queer (bisexual to be exact) and I want to read queer books. Re-reads do not count.

7. Read more short stories

Say at least 18? I mean I classify short stories as under 100-110 pages so..

8. Read some creature feature books

I'm aiming for 8-12. Cryptids count.

9. Read some Bizarro fiction

I'm aiming for at least 6 things. Keep in mind things CAN overlap. I'm not sure if they will but it's allowed.

10. Read a book for my group every month

I mean I know I don't strictly have to, but i'd like to. My group is (18+) Creatures, Creatures Everywhere!. Each month has a theme, each theme being a creature. Like aliens (January), Succubus/Incubus (February) and more. Zombies, Demons, Ghosts etc.

11. Read some Stephen King books

Say, at least 4?

12. Read what I want when I want

This may sound the opposite of the above, but I WANT to read those things. I'll just read them when I want and hopefully do at least ok on the "goals". I can keep them in my mind and be like "hmm...do I want to read this at the moment" type of thing. But no forcing. That defeats the "fun" purpose. Though I don't seem to be too much of a mood reader anyway so...maybe that helps? Of course this also includes everything that isn't somehow mentioned here. All the things. Dying to read it? READ IT.

13. Read more of my "favorite" authors and genres

By "favorite" authors I mean authors i've read like...1 or 2 books...loved it...and just...haven't read any more by them. Genres is pretty self explanatory.

14. Draw

I want to draw and I never do. I don't need to be great or even good. I just want to draw for my own fun. I need to allow myself to be ok with that.

15. Spend time on other hobbies too

Besides reading, there is: Drawing (see above), watching tv, movies, playing video games, listening to music. Maybe try some writing out? Who knows.

16. Check out some podcasts

And for the love of God catch up on Books in the Freezer!

17. Read some fanfiction, wattpad, webtoons and AO3 Stories

Because I can. Because I want to but never allow myself to because it "doesn't count" towards Goodreads. Who cares?! Though some wattpad and webtoons stories do but not usually. It counts as reading at the very least. Do it because I want to. Goodreads goal be damned.

18. Color some

I have adult coloring books that I never color in. Why? I should fix this. Even though i'm not good at coloring...note to self: see drawing goal.

19. Get new glasses and bookshelves

This is something that I need. Especially the glasses.

20. Set Goodreads goal low

Low for me anyway. So as to not stress about it. 26-78...I'm thinking 65. Somewhere in there. And then LET. IT. BE. I enjoyed pushing myself these past couple years. I don't need to do that anymore. Reading is a hobby of mine, nothing more.

21. Blog More

I want to blog more

22. Be as consistent as I can

This applies to blogging and booktubing. However I do live with chronic pain, a lot of medical issues, and there is life in general. I know my health matters first. So I want to be as consistent as I reasonably can. I want to have more content basically. Do things.

23. Read other blogs more

Self explanatory. It's not like I don't, I just want to make more of an effort to do so. And maybe comment sometimes...that sounds like a good idea.

24. Read "taboo" stories, erotica and smut

I want to read some taboo stories, as well as erotica and smut (though i'm not classifying erotica or smut in and of themselves as taboo, I just figured i'd mention this all in one goal, because reasons). While taboo, erotica, and smut all mean different things, I just want to read a mix of them all with no particular numbers in mind.

25. Read Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey

I've never read either and a good friend of mine wants me to try them out, and I want to try them out. We'll see what happens.

26. Continue the Kiss of the Moon series by C.R. Gangell

The Kiss of the Moon series is Here on Wattpad. Well that's the beginning of the first book. My husband has read the entire series (more than once) and loves it. I read the first one and really did enjoy it. He won't stop bugging me about continuing (and finishing) the series. It's a long series though so i'd like to continue with it and get at least half way done. It is on Goodreads too!
(edited later in January: I have no desire to continue this series, I liked the first book but it's so complicated for me, so many characters and I have absolutely no desire to continue with it. It's not bad but I wanted to continue it because my husband loves it so much but I had to come to the realization the thought of it was stressing me, the exact OPPOSITE of what I want my reading to do. I quit the series. If fantasy and shifters and werewolves are your thing, check it out. It's not bad, it's just not for me).

27. Read the books I got from Netgalley...and then NEVER GO BACK

Will I succeed at that second half? STAY TUNED TO FIND OUT. Lol.

28. Read at least 4 spiritual nonfiction books and practice my spirituality more

I'm Wiccan and I want to read more pagan-related books, but I also want to take my time with them.

29. Practice my spirituality more

Pretty self-explanatory.

30. Watch some documentaries and more movies

I don't have a set number of movies I want to watch I just want to watch more of them as I have so many I want to watch! Also 29 is an awkward number so I wanted an even 30.

Queer Books I Really Want To Read (that I already own)

I want to pre-face this with saying I am not making any promises as to when i'll get to these books. One of my 2019 goals is to read at least 12 Queer books that I already own (and re-reads don't count). I have a lot more than 12, more than what i'm even going to be putting here. These are just some of the books I can choose from for that goal and in particular the ones that i'm most excited for. So I should be reading at least some of these next year, though probably not all of them. I think I can guarantee I won't get to all of them because I couldn't stop adding more! I just want to read everything apparently, but you can never have too many queer books! In no particular order.

1 & 2. Honey Girl and Riptide Summer by Lisa Freeman

I know it involves a girl who likes girls (I don't know if she's a lesbian, bisexual etc.) and beach summer fun. I bought Honey Girl years ago and then ended up winning an ARC of Riptide Summer and...I still haven't read Honey Girl (and Riptide Summer came out May 2017). I've wanted to read them the past couple summers and haven't gotten to them.

3 & 4. Ice Crypt and Ice Kingdom by Tiana Warner

I read Ice Massacre by Tiana Warner in May 2018 and loved it! Lesbian mermaids, character depth, interesting plot, swoon-worthy romance, YES PLEASE. Ice Massacre is the first in the trilogy. I might decide to re-read it before continuing on with Ice Crypt and Ice Kingdom. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.

5. For Real by Alexis Hall

I know it's involves a D/s relationship between 2 guys, one older one younger with the younger being the Dom and i've heard it's a great romance.

6. Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite

I've heard nothing but good things about Poppy Z. Brite's books! I know it's horror, with vampires, lgbt in some way...I mean it sounds right up my alley!

7. Unicorn Tracks by Julia Ember

Fantasy with a bi mc and an f/f romance. Julia Ember also wrote The Seafarer's Kiss which I don't have but involves bisexual mermaids, so I want to read this to see if I like it and if I do I might just pick up The Seafarer's Kiss! Or I might anyway because bisexual mermaids but I have heard that The Seafarer's Kiss involves characters acting like a woman's only purpose is to birth babies and as a woman who can't do that reading such things hurts/makes me angry. However i've heard it's challenged but not much? I don't know, I still want to check it out. But I have Unicorn Tracks by the same author so I think I should read it first.

8. Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy

I haven't read anything by Julie Murphy but I know she's a pretty popular author and there was some controversy surrounding this book (because apparently only certain people's stories/figuring out their sexuality journeys are allowed to be told) which is own voices (as are many, though not all, of the books on this list for that matter). So I bought it...and I haven't read it yet. Must fix that.

9. Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat

I think this is one of those books you either love or hate, rarely in between. M/M with a lot of trigger warnings.

10. How to make a wish by Ashley Herring Blake

I've heard great things about this book (and author) with a bisexual MC. Why haven't I read it yet? I don't know!

11. A Bouquet of Gardenias by Judy kemp

I know it's erotica with a bisexual MC. Give. It. To. Me. Oh wait...I already have it, I just need to read it already!

12. So Sweet by Rebekah Weatherspoon

I read Better Off Red by Rebekah Weatherspoon this year, wlw vampires and I loved it! I know So Sweet has a bisexual MC, an interracial romance and an age gap.

13 & 14. Blacker Than Blue and Soul To Keep by Rebekah Weatherspoon

These can go here too, as they are the second and third books in the Better Off Red trilogy I just mentioned. wlw vampires, I AM HERE FOR IT.

15. Ilavani by Kaelan Rhywiol

Queer, pagan, polyamorous, universe with bdsm. Just read the synopsis (all titles link to Goodreads page)! It sounds interesting!

16. Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore

I've heard mostly good things and that there is an f/f romance.

17. Diary of the Hollow by Ashleigh Gauch

It involves mental health.

18. Thornfruit by Felicia Davin

Bisexual character...fantasy...haven't heard much but have a little (it was good). Has amazing ratings. I don't really know anything about it, but I have it and I wanna read it.

19. Attack of the Lesbian Zombies by Saxon Bennett and Layce Gardner

Lesbian. Zombies.

20. Out of the Blue by Sophie Cameron

I believe this has a f/f relationship between a bisexual disabled girl and a lesbian poc.

21. Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz

I loved Not Otherwise Specified but haven't yet read anything else by Hannah Moskowitz!

22. Stealing the Wind by Shira Anthony

M/M. Queer mermen erotica.

23. Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh

Bisexual Necromancer. That's all I needed to know. WHY HAVEN'T I READ THIS YET?!

24. Swamp Girl by Iza Moreau

F/F YA Adventure novel.

25. Shell Game by Benny Lawrence

Lesbian. Pirates. Ever since I read The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie duology of lesbian pirates i've wanted MORE lesbian pirates in my life.

26. Kraken by M. Caspian

I'm into horror, weird things, and tentacles and a friend says "If you like suspense filled horror and/or tentacles, you will enjoy Kraken." so it sounds right up my alley.

27. The Pirate's Booty by Alex Westmore

Lesbian. Pirates.

28. Keepers of the Cave by Gerri Hill

F/F Paranormal Romance of some sort.

29. Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst

Princesses fall in love.

30. The Soldier's Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian

M/M historical romance and something to do with chronic pain.

This is not a full list! I want to continue The Beast of Callaire series, read Peter Darling, Making Love, Girls Who Bite, The World of Cherry, On The Rocks, Ascension, and so much more! I just figured listing 30 was a good even number. Why must I want to read all the things? Are there any on this list you think I should make a high priority? Have you read any of them? (no spoilers please) What queer books do you have your eye on? Let me know below!
