April 2018 Wrap Up

What I read and reviews

The title of each book is linked to my review on Goodreads

I finished Lights Out by R.L. Stine

Rating: 2.5

I was frustrated for Holly through-out the entire book. I loved Holly, hated pretty much everyone else. I called who it was long before it was obvious but not because it was predictable exactly but because i've come to realize how these things go now. I didn't hate reading it, I was just so frustrated that no one would listen to her though I do understand how it's all realistic in that sense. My main issue is how Mick treats Holly and how easily she forgives him...I don't get it. And Geri, omg, chill girl.

It was a fun read just, imo, not one of the better Fear Street books. I don't know it just felt a bit off to me. The ending didn't feel like it resolved much of anything..

I finished SHOCK Anthology

Rating: 3.48 stars

TW: Blood, Death, Murder, Abuse, Drugs

1- Witch Work by Neil Gaiman (4 stars)
2- Blooderflies by Cullen Bunn (5 stars)

6- Beserker by Jim Starlin- (3 stars)

11- Iste Bu Instanbul! by Charles Vess- (2.5 stars)
12- Based on a true story by Brian Azzarello- (2.5 stars) And yes, chocolate IS poison to dogs! The larger the dog, the more it'd take to be lethal. (seriously, just google "is chocolate poisonous to dogs" and you'll get plenty of information on how it works and how much it takes)
13- Little Red Hood by Frank Tieri- (4 stars) Loved this twisted take on Little Red Riding Hood!
14- Dead City by Michael Gaydos- (3 stars)
15- Live or Die by Joe Pruett- (3 stars)
16- Metrocrash by Marc Guggenheim- (3 stars)
17- Paroled by Stephan Nilson- (2 stars)

19- Circle of Fear by Richard Starkings- (4 stars)
20- Moments by Mike Zagari- (5 stars)
21- A Job by Marko Stujanovic- (3.5 stars)

My only issue with this one really being Kerguelen had very tiny blurry text that was impossible to read. Hopefully it's just the formatting being in pdf but I was able to read the rest of them with no problems..

Many of them I could see good messages in, even evoking emotion with The Last Dance With You making me actually cry! Though a few others are definitely cry-worthy too! I loved the touching messages through-out it. Some were downright scary (and I loved them!).

Some of them did feel too short, like I wish they had been longer and more fleshed out. Which isn't a bad thing, I just wanted more of them. Some of them I didn't see the point or understand, but I enjoyed more of them then I didn't.

Over-all a pretty solid anthology, honestly one of my highest rated ones. I'm very glad I read this! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher.

I DNF'd A Graveyard Visible by Steve Conoboy

Rating: 2 stars

I’m sorry but I am so done. I tried to make it through, got to 60% before I DNF’d.

The writing feels stilted. Always telling this and telling that. It’s also kind of confusing, just when I think I got it, I don’t. I do feel sorry for Caleb and Misha, but for the most part I just don’t care. It doesn’t make much sense and it’s also very depressing. I was struggling to continue then I come across a part where some boy calls his friend gay as an insult and read a little more, realizing at this point my eyes are just going over words and i’ve stopped caring long ago. I’m sorry but I just can’t push myself to finish.

I doubt this review makes much sense, but neither does the book to me so...take that how you will.

I read My Sweet Audrina by V.C. Andrews

Rating: 3.5 stars

Well this is a confusing book to review and i’m not going to try to make it the best review but I do want to at least get my thoughts out about it a little bit.

I was loving this book, it sucked me in and gave me all the feels! I love Audrina, still do. She’s been through so much crap and her family...well i’ll just say they all need Therapy! Every single one of them.

There is abuse, rape, r-word and general disturbing content so know that going in. There are problematic aspects (like ableism) and some (not all) of it did seem, to me, to be seen as obviously bad often shown through Audrina’s growth and inner thoughts. Her character development is awesome! Mostly. I’m still iffy on the very very ending. It is making me think though and i’m not 100% sure on my feelings for it but i’m leaning towards I don’t like it. So that is reflected in my rating, I was going to give it about a 4.5, I was loving this book, but have settled on a 3.5 as I don’t want to deny that there were many nuggets of awesome through-out this book too! And for a lot of it I even would have called feminist due to Audrina’s character development.

I have to remain vague because I don’t want to spoil anything and I am glad I read this book! At one point I wanted to DNF but I am glad I didn’t! I would even recommend checking it out if you are that interested in it. I tabbed and highlighted so much through-out this book and had strong reactions to several parts of it (often going “Hell yes Audrina!”) but it’s not perfect, it has it’s issues and can I just ignore those last, like 2 pages, exist? Please? I sort of get it but I still don’t like it.

This is probably a very confusing review...i’m sorry.

I read Ground Floor, Second Room to the Left by Chris Sarantopoulos

Rating: 4.5 stars

I can't say too much because it's short but I really enjoyed this horror short story! I wasn't sure about it in the very beginning but the horror slowly creeps in more and more while it brings what's truly happening to light. I can't stop thinking about that ending! For a quick read it packs a punch!

I read Guardian Angels & Other Monsters by Daniel H. Wilson

Rating: 3.93 stars

I really enjoyed this anthology! Many of the stories were very emotional, and it on different themes using robots to enhance the messages. Out of 14 stories there was only 1 (Blood Memory) I didn't like, which is awesome for an anthology, or collection really! The rest I loved to varying degrees, with my favorites being "The Blue Afternoon That Lasted Forever", "The Executor", "One for Sorrow: A Clockwork Dynasty Story" and "Special Automatic". One for Sorrow makes me realize I need to read A Clockwork Dynasty! So glad I read this, having picked it up for a group read. It spoke very much to the human and emotional side of things for me, not being too heavy on the science, which I loved personally!

I read Lesbian Zombies from Outerspace Volume 1 by Jave Galt-Miller

Rating: 3 stars

Re-read April 27th 2018 because I need to read volume 2 so I know wtf happens. It could go so well or so wrong. TW: Homophobia. I love Gwen. Ace is an ass, as are all the typical guys, but Gwen don't let it slide. She tells it like it is and she's fucking awesome. I'm not sure what to think about this so i'm keeping the rating at 3 for now, i'll make a final judgement after I read volume 2 and finish it. It doesn't take long to read so I figured i'd do it to refresh my memory. I noticed details I didn't notice the first time or I forgot about. The art style didn't bother me like it did the first time (it's like an 80s style) and I think that's just because I wasn't expecting it the first time.

I read Lesbian Zombies from Outerspace Volume 2 by Jave Galt-Miller

Rating: 1 star

Omg the lost potential! It could've gone so well, it even looked like it was headed that way at times but that ending, fuck this homophobic misogynistic fantasy crap!

It had twists and turns and at times made me think it was going to be so good, then it all went to hell in a hand-basket.

I read Food Wars! Volume 6 by Yuto Tsukuda

Rating: 5 stars

(Minus spoilers) Still loving Food Wars! The characters, the food, the intensity, the art. ALL OF IT. Another cliff-hanger ending! Gaaaaa

I read Dance in the Vampire Bund Volume 4 by Nozomu Tamaki

Rating: 5 stars

Damn you cliff-hangers!

Tried to be vague but also LOTS OF FEELINGSS!!

This volume had me in TEARS. I had to put the book down to collect myself! What happens in the middle, poor Mina!! That is awful and humiliating! I love how this volume wasn't afraid to tackle such a theme. Men can be so cruel and heart-less, thinking they own women. Being a Queen may not be all it's cracked up to be. I wish Mina knew Akira wouldn't think any less of her. She fucking apologized for them humiliating her, treating her as their property just because she is the only female true blood vampire left. They were cruel those men, and SHE was the one that was sorry, to Yuki for having to see that. She did NOTHING WRONG. My heart fucking broke for her! Yuki tells her as such.

Oh please Akira, be ok!

I also read some of The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales, and Horrors! 365 Scary Stories.

Stuff I watched

I watched my regular shows, iZombie, My Little Pony, Supernatural, Citrus (which is now over unless they make more seasons), and Siren. Oh wait, Siren is new! Siren is an amazing sci-fi/fantasy mermaid show on Freeform and Hulu! I am loving it! I am behind however on all of the shows mentioned except Citrus.

I also finished watching Season 11 of The X-Files.

As usual I don't have much else to say here. I didn't watch any movies.
