Why I want to enjoy other hobbies as well

Last week I made a post (i'm actually writing this right after I wrote and posted that one...ssssh lol) about Why I Read. I love to read and that isn't going to stop. But what has stoppd? Me enjoying my other hobbies. And I need to fix that! And I need to be on social media less to accomplish that and realize it's ok to not read all the books and to have more than one hobby.

Another hobby i've enjoyed but always get insecure about and don't do much is art. I enjoy drawing, want to learn to draw, and paint. It's a creative outlet, it's fun, it can help keep the mind sharp as well. I need to be ok not being great at art right away and realize it takes a lot of practice and the only thing I actually need to do is have fun. If i'm having fun and not hurting anyone, who gives a crap if I suck at it?

I want to watch more tv and movies. I am always so behind on that stuff and there is stuff I want to watch but I guess my brain just doesn't prioritize it because...I don't know. It's seen as lesser? As if they can't be interesting forms of art as well, entertaining, and sometimes the brain just needs to relax anyway. It's a muscle. Exercise can help it but all muscles need breaks as well.

Video games. I miss Sims. I miss Mortal Kombat, Need for Speed, MMO's...video games in general. Another form of art, even creative expression. Another form of story-telling. And they help hand-eye coordination. Using a controller (or portable console) even helps strengthen my weak left hand/thumb (because of pollicization due to hypoplastic left thumb). And fun damn-it! Fun is important to have in life.

Podcasts...I haven't really gotten into podcasts. I've listened to a little bit (awhile ago) of "Books in the Freezer" podcast but just...stopped. I don't know why, I was enjoying it. And there are podcasts that sound interesting. Podcasts on all types of things.

Puzzles. I've enjoyed sudoku. There are other puzzles i'm interested in as well. Codeword, mazes and more. They also help keep the mind sharp as I mentioned in my "Why I Read" post. And I feel a sense of accomplishment when i've completed a puzzle.

Writing. I used to write stories, mostly about my Sims but they would be full stories about them and their world. Helped with pictures from my game. I've written a little bit of non-sim stuff as well (mostly when I was growing up), and I miss writing. That creative outlet. I know I have stories brewing in my brain and wishing i'd write them. I know I could do it (i'm not saying it'd be easy). Another creative outlet. Fun. Using my brain to create. Possibly sharing them.

Of course I also enjoy this blog and making YouTube videos and I will not limit myself to just one hobby when I blog or make a video. I could make blog posts or videos about other hobbies besides reading as well.

Why I Read

For the Amazon freebies, I just happened to see they were free (usually because of bookbub). Often they are only free for a short time so I can't guarantee they still are when you see this. Of course I can't review what I haven't read yet so when I say what they are about it's just from what I see on Goodreads/have heard.

So what have you picked up/watched/done recently? Any of these sound interesting or have you read/watched them too? Comment down below! :)

Why I Read

There are many reasons to read. Many wonderful reasons. To have fun, to escape, stress-relief. To learn. To sharpen the mind. To realize you are not alone.

Why do I read? All of the above actually. Different books serve different purposes. I read mainly to escape the stress of living with chronic pain. I don't know what a minute without pain is like, because I was born this way thanks to VACteRL Association. And miscellaneous crap. And as I get older it gets worse. It's stressful and it sucks. Reading provides a bit of an escape. And of course the world at large is stressful as well.

The other main reason I read is to learn I am not alone. I grew up having Dr's look at me like i'm a freak of nature because they had never heard of my medical issues. I still get that. And i've never met another person with my medical issues (though now thanks to the internet I can talk to others with the same medical issues-and it's wonderful. But I didn't have even that growing up).

I felt like I was the only one in the world like me, that's how I was treated and no one around me understood. No one around me understands to this day, but I am very grateful to the internet to talk to others who do understand and to realize I am most definitely not alone.

That and realizing i'm queer at 13. I thought that was wrong. Sinful. And didn't see any media representing me, at all. Now I do. And again, can talk to many lgbtq+ people online and see I am not alone.

I can also see I am not alone through books. People write the books. And I see myself in so many characters in so many little ways that mean so much and aren't so little after all. I also get to see viewpoints and experiences that are not my own, and that is beautiful as well.

I can also have fun adventures, fall in love with characters and their stories. Go places and do things I can't in real life, either because of my medical issues keeping me pretty home-bound or because they are fantastical things that don't actually exist. I mean I do have complete aphantasia (when awake) so the experience might not be quite as immersive for me as it for others but I can still enjoy it and love to read.

I also enjoy learning. I want to learn about animals, nature, spiritual beliefs, queer theory, disability studies, and experiences that are not my own. Among other random things. A good non-fiction book about something you are passionate about can be a wonderful joy to read as well.

Because of my medical issues and needing help to survive I am terrified of being alone one day or having people need to care for me and being unable to tell them what I need. I need to be able to communicate. Reading can help keep the mind sharp. Having my mind go from age, if I live that long or if it goes young, can mean a painful death for me. Sure I can't do much about it but reading may help, and it's fun so why not try it? There isn't much else I can do.

Those are some reasons why I read. Why do you read? Comment down below!

March 1st to March 7th, 2020 Book Haul + Weekly Wrap Up

The + has always meant weekly wrap up basically I figured I should probably just say it.

Amazon Freebies

Murder at Kensington Gardens by Lee Strauss: #6 in a historical fiction cozy mystery series and I already had (were also freebies I believe) #1-3.

On Edge by John W. Mefford: A thriller, #13 in a series I already have (also freebies) #1-3, #6-9, #14, #16-17...very low on my list but I got one freebie and when that happens I can't say no to more freebies in the series, in case I ever actually get to it and like it. Apparently it's also #1 in another series? So many books. So many series.

Renegade by Erica Stevens: Young adult paranormal romance, vampires, #2 in a series, already had #1.

Love on the Run by Ellie Spark: F/F, #2 in a series, already had #3 & #5. However it's a series of standalone lesbian romance novellas.

Audio-Books

The Messengers by Lindsay Joelle: Sci-fi. Audible original thing.

Tell Me Lies by J.P. Pomare: Psychological Thriller. Another audible original thing.

Smashwords

Smashwords had another sale so I went to the freebies. Everything I got from Smashwords was free. However this is only half of what I got. I don't need to mention every little thing, and it's not a matter of shame. Everything is on my Goodreads shelves, I even have a shelf titled "Smashwords" if you're nosy (obviously nsfw), if I was ashamed it wouldn't be there, it's just a matter of not wanting to deal with judgmental people if I can help it. I also have an "own" shelf that should contain every book I own with other more specific shelves like "kindle-tbr, physical-tbr, own-but-not-yet-read, own-kindle, own-physical" etc.

His Candy Cane by Aubrey London: A short erotic story with Santa

Sexy Maid Surprise: New Adult Erotica by Virginia Love: Do I really need to say? The title does that.

Cherry Pop by Evelyn Ellis: 3 erotic stories

Gothic Romance by L.V. Lloyd: M/M Gothic Romance

Alice in Sexland by Ripley King: Alice in Sexland is a XXX sexual satire. A fun yet explicit romp through the magical world of Sexland. Erotica of the hardest nature. (I copied that from the synopsis)

First Time Spanked: Lesbian Spanking Erotica by Giselle Renarde: What it says on the tin

What I Read

Titles link to my reviews on Goodreads.

Adulthood Is a Myth: A Sarah's Scribbles Collection by Sarah Andersen: Read via Libby. Mixed feelings. Gave it 3⭐

Read via Libby. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz: Never read it as a child. 29 short stories. Disliked most of them. Average came to 2.36⭐

Read via Libby. El Deafo by Cece Bell: I had very mixed feelings on this one. I gave it 3⭐

Read via Hoopla. The Secret Lives of Bats: My Adventures with the World's Most Misunderstood Mammals by Merlin Tuttle: Non-fiction book on bats. Bats are very misunderstood, adorable, and needed. Loved it! 4.25⭐ 🦇❤️

Nothing to report with life or other hobbies.

February 2020 Overview

So...February was shit. I've already talked about everything of mention in the weekly sunday posts (book haul +'s). It started with our kitten, only a few months old and we were struggling with his health and a vet that apparently has an awful reputation but we learned too late that said vet is an ass, Shadow dying on my 31st birthday. Just minutes after midnight. So I spent the entire today hearing "Happy birthday! Hope it's a great day!" grieving our kitten that just died and wanting to scream "That ship already sailed away!" about it being a good day.

Though I realize that wasn't the fault of anyone telling me happy birthday, that's typically what you do, it was just like pouring salt in a wound. For months we did everything we could for him that we knew of. I've also talked about it in videos. I don't want to rehash it more. We had him cremated and we have his paw print, and of course he will forever stay in our hearts. R.I.P Shadow.

Then someone stole our generator, which we still need to replace. And we have well water which means no electric=no water=no toilet, and with my medical issues this is BAD, so that's still a worry. Fuck you whoever stole it! And then a whole bunch of constant bookternet drama, the usual, and me wanting to scream over it all but silently just fuming and miserable.

Then my granny died. R.I.P Granny. She would have been 95 next month. So it's been a very hard month. Somehow I am still here though and got some shit done. But that's more to do with the fact that if I didn't do shit I would have lost my mind completely.

I made 14 youtube videos and 9 blog posts (including the 4 weekly sunday posts, the January overview post, and 4 other ones). I finished 12 books and watched 5 movies. Also watched some tv. I also drew...one thing...a pikachu. But still, I guess that's something.

What I Finished Reading

TV I Watched

I watched Supernatural Season 15 Episode 11, so I am caught up and waiting for Supernatural to come back next month. I watched Hellier Season 1 Episode's 2-5 and Season 2 Episode's 1-3. I enjoy it, I guess. I keep watching. I watched Fuller House Season 5 Episode's 4-9 and am anxiously waiting for the rest to be released. I also watched Locke & Key Season 1 Episode 1. I liked it but i've only watched the first episode so far.

Movies I Watched (and what I rated them on letterboxd)

Charlotte's Web (1973)- 4⭐
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory (1971)- 1⭐
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)- 4⭐
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)- 3.5⭐
The Little Mermaid (1989)- 5⭐

Average Rating: 3.5

I would say that's all I did but with the month I had...i'm glad for what I did. As you might be able to tell I had to take it easy on myself with what I read and watched. I just wasn't in the right head-space for anything too hard and needed a pick me up. Here's hoping for a better March. *crosses fingers and knocks on wood*
